This paper aims to discover the trends of Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (HAMKA) in extracting the highlights and lessons from the verses related to prophetic history (Fiqh al-Sīrah) through his Tafsir al-Azhar. The importance of the research stems from the fact that it deals with the best and most comprehensive exegesis written in the Malay language. Moreover, Hamka was a polymath Muslim scholar who possessed a great level of sciences and skills, and at the same time, he was also a preacher, reformer, politician and writer. This study is based on the descriptive-analytical method in describing Hamka's biography, his methods in interpreting the verses, and his trends in extracting highlights and lessons from those verses. This research found that the most important Hamka’s trends are: clarifying highlights and lessons in Islamic propagation and politics, emphasising highlights and lessons in belief and behaviour, relating the prophetic history’s reflections to the current situation, linking the highlights and lessons of the prophetic history’s reflections to the Islamic-Nationalism ideology, finding out the jurisprudence rulings deduced from the prophetic events, and correcting the society’s understandings and reforming its entity. These trends are reflections of Hamka's missions in Islamic propagation, reform, politics, and society. Therefore, this research will make a scientific contribution to the field of reflection on prophetic history and Quranic exegesis (al-Tafsīr); where it presents a model of the practical and living approach in extracting the highlights and lessons of the prophetic history from the first source, which is the Holy Quran.
