Abstract

Tantrum is a behaviour commonly associated with autistic children, i.e., being prone to crying, screaming, raging, and hitting themselves when their desires are not fulfilled. Children with autism exhibit tantrums in public without feeling wary or embarrassed. They are unaware of their behaviour due to limited abilities in thinking, communication, and social interaction. It is unfortunate that in this case, some people in society look at children with autism as a problem and will look askance, making the parents feel embarrassed. Consequently, these children will no longer be brought out because of the negative views of society. This article aims to explain the methods of controlling tantrum behaviour in children with autism. Document analysis is the research method applied in this study based on past studies, journals, and books related to autism and tantrums. This article emphasises four controlling methods of tantrum behaviour: (i) the use of social story technique, (ii) parent involvement in children’s activities, (iii) emphasis on Quranic education; and (iv) mediative learning methods. These methods can help control children’s unstable emotions and tantrum behaviour. All parties, especially parents, teachers, and the community, must play their roles to ensure this tantrum behaviour can be controlled without causing self-injury to the autistic children themselves and those around them.
